Typography workshop at Sorbonne university, Paris, France

In April 2010, the university of “Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne” contacted me to come up with a concept for a one-day workshop, as part of their Déjà Vu exhibition. I chose to work on the curating texts that had been featured in the catalog, and selected numerous examples of XIXth century woodtype alphabets from my personal library. Starting with that, students were asked to design words as graphic images.

Many thanks to Pauline Toulouzou and Bérénice Moulin for putting this together, and to the students for their participation. Hat tip to Malte Martin.

Type design workshop: Pau, France

opto.frtag

In january 2010, I conducted a one-week type design workshop in École supérieure des arts & de la communication (Ésac) in Pau, France.
Starting with calligraphy, 11 students then moved towards typography by picking a randomly selected design brief. Two groups were formed. The week’s content included type sketching and drawing, execution on tracing paper, digitization and production. The last day was spared for the design of a type specimen meant to be displayed at rather large scale in public space.
Many thanks to the course coordinator Patrice Chaminade, to the school staff and to the students for this pleasant week in the city of Henri IV!

In january 2010, Franck Jalleau, Margaret Gray and I conducted a one-week workshop taking place at the Institut Mémoires de l‘édition contemporaine (Imec) in Caen, France. This workshop was organized by the École Estienne and gathered parisian and european art schools students. It is part of a greater series of events, including publications, exhibitions and lectures in april 2010, called Le printemps de la typographie (“Typography spring”). The 21 students were asked to explore the theme Écritures imaginaires (“fantasy writings”), taking the most of this unique place. The institute is indeed located in a former XIIIth century abbey.
Many thanks to Gérard Becker from École Estienne for putting the whole event together! A lot of things connected to this event are following, so stay tuned.
